Day 871: New Eyes

🖤 Get well soon Tommy ! #teamrivs #RageOn 🖤

"The real voyage of discovery consists

not in seeking new landscapes, but

in having new eyes."

— Marcel Proust

Today is day 871 of Nutrisystem. I stumbled across this quote and it fit the day. I definitely have found new eyes over the past 871 days. I see the world, other people and more importantly, myself, through different eyes today. I'm still peeling off the layers of insulation I wrapped myself in over the years and every time a new layer comes off I see myself and the world just a little bit differently. It's been 871 days and it still feels like there are a lot of layers left to attack. I mentioned yesterday that looking at my first "before" photo makes me a little ill. I wondered to myself how I couldn't "see" myself. Well, the side view photo revealed the answer. It was all in how I looked at myself. If I happened to look in a mirror back then it was always the head on front view. There was no turning sideways to check out the side view ! It may have been an unconscious decision but it was a decision nonetheless to look at myself one dimensionally. Perspective changes when you take in the 360 degree view. The photos that pushed me to address my weight were taken from someone else's perspective and I think that's why they jolted me into action. Maybe for the first time in my life I saw myself as others must have seen me. There was no denying how huge I had gotten. I've been through a lot in life but those few days between Christmas 2018 and 12/29 when I signed up for Nutrisystem were pretty dark. I had 2 choices: ignore the pain I was feeling and keep eating or do something about my weight. Ignoring it meant getting even bigger and increasing risk of diabetes & heart disease. I didn't want to go down that road, so I'm glad I had the courage and the means to do something about it. I revisit those photos often to remind me where I came from and to ensure I never find myself back there. I don't intend to see that old view with these new eyes ! I'm kind of liking what I see today and I certainly feel 1000 times better physically and mentally !

Breakfast was a 160 calorie cherry cheese roll and an 80 calorie Light & Fit strawberry cheesecake yogurt. I guess it was a fruity kind of morning ! Morning snack was a 120 calorie vanilla shake with peanut butter powder. Lunch was my leftovers from yesterday - a stuffed cabbage roll and the remains of a potato pancake, along with some roasted veggies. Afternoon snack was 1/2 cup cottage cheese (80 calories) and 2 Alyssa's oatmeal cookies (90 calories). Dinner was a 250 calorie meatloaf sandwich with roasted veggies. Evening snack was xxx. Since my lunch was leftovers I can't really put an accurate number on my total calories, so I will go with 1200+. I did get 80 ounces of water in.

I stayed up way too late last night and it was well after 3 am before I went to sleep. In spite of that I woke up before 9:30 and felt well rested, so I got up. After breakfast on the porch it was time to face the 70 minute workout I've been avoiding. It was a good day for it because it was a cool 70 degrees and cloudy. If the sun had been shining I'd have lingered on the front porch way too long ! I got on the treadmill just before noon and to my amazement I was able to do the whole 70 minutes with iFit Guide Dr. Jarrod Spencer non-stop. Ironic that the topic of this workout was Anxiety: Fear of The Unknown ! He was walking through a forest somewhere in Pennsylvania and from a mental health perspective it was quite a relaxing workout. Next up was another in the Mount Everest series, this time with iFit Guide Kenton Cool. He talked a lot about the history of Everest exploration so it was pretty interesting. Workout #3 was Zimbabwe with iFit guide Mick Davie and I could listen to him all day long ! Last, but never least, was a rerun in Sedona, AZ with iFit trainer Dewayne Montgomery, aka Coach Pain. I completed this one on 5-18 for the May iFit challenge but it didn't show up as "completed" in the challenge series so I opted to redo it. It was only 22 minutes and marked the absolute completion of the challenges for this month. Tomorrow's iFit schedule is a more manageable 90 minutes .. lol ! Today I logged 148 minutes, 8.5 miles and 1011 calories. I believe this is the most I've ever done in one day and I don't plan on doing it again anytime soon ! I developed a sore toe and a blister on my heel but a little padding fixed that right up. I opted not to use the Total Gym and instead used that time to get some things done around the house, like laundry and straightening up the house. I got a lot done and I'm happy about that.

I indulged in a little retail therapy very early this morning. I have thought a long time about what I wanted to do for myself in celebration of meeting my weight loss and financial & physical fitness goals. Clothes, shoes, jewelry or other accessories didn't seem special enough. A new car is too extravagant and not wise considering the current state of our economy. In the end I decided on a new laptop since mine is over 5 years old and for once I'd like to replace it before it dies ! I basically ordered a new version of what I have, directly from HP, and the one I'd been eyeing was on sale so I got a great deal. The estimated ship date is June 8 so it won't be here for a bit, and I am hoping to be at my goal weight by the time it arrives.

The skies finally started to clear around 4 pm so I got to enjoy some sun on the front porch in between workouts. I had dinner out there as well. It was breezy so even with the sun the porch didn't get uncomfortably warm when the sun came out. It's been yet another great weekend and I'm rejuvenated and ready for the week ahead ! It helps that as of 5 pm Friday I'll be on vacation !! On that note it's time for a shower and bed.
