Day 634: Staying Positive
It's day 634 of Nutrisystem. I chose this quote today because it was part of a Brene Brown TED talk that I listened to during my lunchtime workout and because I know from personal experience just how true it is. I spent a lot of years numb and I wasn't able to feel happiness or joy - now I know why. I didn't realize that numbing the painful emotions also kept me from enjoying the good ones. I often wondered what was wrong with me. Why couldn't I feel happy ? I know now that numb is numb and it blocks out all emotion. It's probably part of the reason I didn't melt down when I was diagnosed with leukemia - I think I was already numb so one more hit didn't really make a difference. I'm glad those days are behind me and I can feel happiness again. The TED talk helped put more of the past in context and also helped put it to rest. I carried the baggage of the past around for too long so it feels good to have it gone. Shedding the weight has been the biggest help. For so many years I hated the way I looked and felt yet I did nothing about it. I think about it now and I wonder why I wasted so many years of my life being unhappy. All those years I wasted are the reason I tend to do whatever makes me happy now. I used to always worry about everyone else's needs and neglected my own. There is nothing wrong with putting others before yourself but if you're not taking care of yourself you often aren't capable of taking care of anyone else. Everything always comes back to balance. It was lacking in my life and now I'm working on figuring out the best way to balance the normal demands we all deal with on a day to day basis.
Today's update on Tommy Riv's states he is intermittently ventilated so the weaning process is continuing. It's a good sign that perhaps his lungs are beginning to heal. The family hasn't said anything about the CT scan so we're left to wonder what the outcome of that was or if it was even done. You hate to think that the news was bad and you hope and pray that it wasn't. I imagine it's difficult for his family to share this journey with so many strangers and who knows, they may still be waiting on results. It seems like Tommy is getting stronger every day but we know he is not out of the woods. Baby steps still. Rage on Tommy !
Breakfast was a 2.1 ounce 160 calorie cherry cheese roll and a 5.3 ounce 80 calorie Light & Fit lemon meringue yogurt. Morning snack was a 120 calorie vanilla shake with peanut butter powder. Lunch was a 4 ounce 240 calorie meatball parmesan melt and a chef salad. Afternoon snack was a honey crisp apple and a 1 ounce 110 calorie chunk of maple bacon cheddar cheese. I logged this as 200 calories total. Dinner was a 4 ounce 190 calorie artichoke & spinach stuffed chicken breast with roasted veggies. Evening snack was a 2.2 ounce 140 calorie lemon zest cake. Total calories for the day are 1130 and I got 80 ounces of water in.
As cozy as my bed was this morning I managed to get up in time to complete a 34 minute HIIT intervals workout with iFit trainer Gideon Akande before work. I overrode his pace and after a few minutes to warm up I set the speed at 3.3 mph for 10 minutes, then increased to 3.4 for 10 minutes and finally 3.5 mph for the final 10 minutes. I let the machine control the incline and that accounted for 2 rounds of 2 minutes at 2%, then 4% and finally 6%. 3.5 mph at 6% incline is no joke ! My lunchtime workout was a 20 minute TED talk with Brene Brown. After only a few seconds to warm up I set the pace at 3.4 mph for the first 10 minutes and 3.5 for the last 10. About 5 minutes into the workout I bumped the incline to 2% and at the 10 minute mark I increased to 3%. Brene's talk was called "The Power of Vulnerability" and it kept my interest the entire time. After work I tackled a 30 minute interval workout in sunny Arizona with iFit trainer John Peel. It had a 1 minute and a 2 minute jogging interval at 5.5 mph and I decided to at least try it. Well, that didn't last more than a few seconds before I thought I'd fly off the back of the treadmill. I will never be a runner or a jogger. Since I couldn't run I threw in a few minutes at 3.5 mph since the programmed pace ranged from 2.5 to 3.2 mph. There were 2 long periods of 8% incline so this was quite the sweatfest ! I logged 84 minutes, 4.5 miles and 516 calories. After dinner I completed the usual Total Gym routine, so I got my week off to a good start ! Fitbit says I did nearly 15,000 steps.
Weather was beautiful today so I spent the entire day working out on the porch. The homey touches I added yesterday made it a nicer place to spend the day and much of the evening ! I could sit out here for hours more but 6 am comes early, so it's time for a shower and bed.
