Day 572: Be Content
"At the end of the night, before you close
your eyes, be content with what you've
done and be proud of who you are."
It's Day 572 of Nutrisystem. As time goes on I'm seeing a little more consistency with my fitness routine and that is something I think about almost every night. It feels good to end the day knowing I've accomplished all of my goals. Before I started Nutrisystem my days usually ended with regret. Every night I'd say I wasn't going to eat an entire pint of Haagen Dazs before bed ... but most of the time I did. I'd tell myself I was only going to eat half but once I got past the halfway mark I'd go ahead and eat the rest "because there wasn't enough there for the next night". I had a justification for every stupid decision I made ! There was no portion control ever and I was always going to do something about my weight "tomorrow". It may not be as serious as drugs or alcohol but food can definitely be an addiction. I always had to make sure I had "enough" on hand. Running out of chocolate or cookies or ice cream or chicken tenders and ranch dressing was not an option. That's why I had to throw away so much food when I started Nutrisystem. Once I made the decison on 12-29-18 my first thought was I needed to eat all that food before my Nutrisystem order arrived. I know, it sounds crazy ! In the end I did not eat all that food. For one, there was not enough time to eat it all and for another I stopped myself and said "what are you thinking?!!!". Why would you stuff yourself with tens of thousands more calories ? In the end I tossed it all and actually lost 5 pounds before I started on 01-04-19. Over the past 572 days I've gone to bed proud many nights, but I've had my fair share of not so proud nights. The dietary changes were the easiest part of this journey. It was the exercise that tripped me up 100 times. Until August of 2019 I worked in the office 5 days a week so I only "had" to exercise once a day, yet I found 100 excuses not to. Once I started working from home 3 days a week I added in the short lunchtime workout, but even that was a struggle some days. Weekends were tough because I wanted to do other things or just be lazy. I couldn't find a rhythm and consistency was not my friend. Then along came the pandemic and I was home 24/7. I had run out of excuses. I'm still a work in progress and I still sometimes struggle but I feel like I'm finally making progress towards consistency and that makes me proud. I like the way exercise makes me feel but I don't think I will ever say I love it. I'm still not that far out from being a couch potato ! Tonight I will go to bed content with what I've done and proud of who I'm becoming.
No change in Tommy Riv's condition. Still on ECMO, still sedated, still fighting. No better but no worse. His wife posted a heart wrenching photo of her hand holding his in his hospital bed. I can't even begin to imagine what she and their 3 daughters are going through. We all know the prognosis is not good but we're all still hoping for a miracle. And so the marathon continues.
Breakfast was a 2.8 ounce 150 calorie package of pancakes with a drizzle of syrup and a 5.3 ounce 80 calorie Light & Fit tiramisu yogurt. Morning snack was a 120 calorie vanilla shake with peanut butter powder. Lunch was a 4 ounce 240 calorie four cheese melt with a chef salad. Afternoon snack was a 1.42 ounce 200 calorie Nature Valley peanut, almond and dark ch0colate protein bar. Dinner was an old favorite, 9.5 ounce 260 calorie roasted turkey medallions with mashed potatoes and roasted veggies. I used to have this entree about once a week but I gave it up most of the time because of my calorie issue. Nice to have it back on the menu but it will still only be a once in a while choice. Evening snack was a 2.1 ounce 130 calorie cream filled chocolate cupcake. Total calories for the day are 1180 and I got 64 ounces of water in.
I had a sluggish start to the day today so although I didn't have time for breakfast before my workout I did get one in before work ! It was a 29 minute walk around Eldorado Park in Scottsdale, AZ with iFit trainer John Peel. It's always nice to start the day with his smiling face ! It started off with with a few 2-3 minute intervals at 2.7 mph with 60-90 second recoveries at 1-1.5 mph. Towards the end he threw in five 30 second intervals at 3 mph with 30 second recoveries at 2.5 mph. There was no incline. My lunchtime workout was a 26 minute hike in St. George, UT with iFit trainer Ashley Paulson. This one brought the incline ! About halfway in we hit max incline for about 5 minutes. Speed ranged from 1.2 mph to 2.8 mph. I was starving after work today so I opted to have dinner first and then hit the treadmill for the last walk of the day. It was a 33 minute walk to Meiji Jingu Shrine in Tokyo, Japan with iFit Guide Masato Niitsu. The area was not so crowded so I was able to catch more of what he said today and it was more interesting than the fish market ! The pace ranged from 2.2 to 2.5 mph and there was plenty of incline during the first 15 minutes so I'm glad I had dinner first ! I logged 88 minutes, 3.4 miles and 410 calories. After a short break it was time to hit the Total Gym and put in the usual 45-50 minutes. Fitbit says I did over 14,000 steps so it was a good day !
Weather was much more pleasant today and there was a breeze most of the day. It rained early this morning so I'm glad I closed all the windows before I went to bed last night ! I worked out on the front porch until about 4:30 when the sun got too hot to bear. I came back out once I was done with my workouts and enjoyed a cup of coffee and my evening snack. Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast tomorrow so it might be a fun day on the front porch !
On that note it's about time for a shower and then it's off to bed to unwind and watch some tv.
