Day 537: Change

"There is a huge difference

between wanting to change and being

 willing to change. Almost everyone

wants to change for the better. Very few

are willing to take the steps necessary to

 create that change.

~John T. Child~

It's Day 537 of Nutrisystem. It took me a long time to find inspiration tonight but when I stumbled across this quote it fit perfectly. I wanted to change for as long as I can remember. I guess I just didn't know how and I obviously didn't put in the effort required. Does anyone really want to be fat ? No, of course not. I was for so many years and I didn't make many attempts to lose the weight. Any attempt I did make was short lived because I always gave up. But I sure did think about not being fat. Wishing I wasn't fat. Wishing my life was better. I wished for so much but in the real world there is no Fairy Godmother to wave a magic wand and make your dreams come too. You have to be your own Fairy Godmother. You have to put in the effort to attain those dreams. I've realized that you have to set goals and you have to continually challenge yourself. I started off with a big goal. I weighed 304 pounds and set my sights on getting to 160. That wasn't quite where I wanted to be, but in the beginning the thought of losing 144 pounds, let alone 154, was pretty frightening. I was pretty much hoping to lose half of my body weight and when you've always felt like a complete failure that is a pretty big mountain to climb. Once the weight started coming off I was able to reset my goal to 150 because I had more confidence in my ability to reach it. I need to weigh myself one of these days and see where I am. I've been asked "why now?" on several occasions and I don't have a good answer. Maybe I just finally hit rock bottom when I saw how huge I had become. Maybe I was finally willing to change. Whatever it was, I'm glad to be on this journey to health and fitness.

Breakfast was a 2 ounce 180 calorie cinnamon roll and a 5.3 ounce 80 calorie Light & Fit toasted coconut vanilla yogurt. Morning snack was a 155 calorie vanilla shake with peanut butter powder. Lunch was a 3.8 ounce 220 calorie pepperoni pizza melt with a chef salad. Dressing added 30 calories. Afternoon snack was a 1.42 ounce 200 Nature Valley salted caramel nut protein bar. Dinner was a 4 ounce 190 calorie artichoke & spinach stuffed chicken breast with roasted veggies. Evening snack was a 2.1 ounce 130 calorie strawberry shortcake cupcake. Total calories for the day are 1185 and I got 96 ounces of water in.

Got up early enough to get the longest workout of the day done first. It was a 33 minute endurance hike in Lake Tahoe. The pace ranged from 1 to 3 mph because of the steep inclines. Even at max incline 1 mph was too slow for me so I boosted the speed to 2 mph. I'd say about half of the workout was at 10% incline so I got my sweat on before work ! My lunchtime workout was more max incline, this time in the Grand Canyon. Thankfully it was only 21 minutes at 2.6 mph because most of the workout was at 10% incline. Another sweatfest in the 90 degree heat ! After work was a 28 minute interval hike in Costa Rica. These intervals were paired with lots of steep incline ! It was a 1:2 ratio so 1 minute at 3.3 mph and 2 minute recovery at 2.5 mph. At the end he threw in two 30 second intervals with a 1 minute recovery. I struggled a bit during this workout but at about the 11 minute mark I hit my stride, maybe because I got through 4 minutes at max incline ! All 3 workouts were with iFit trainer John Peel, who is my favorite ! I logged 82 minutes, 3.5 miles and 600 calories. After dinner I put in about 50 minutes on the Total Gym. I'm doing a couple new exercises with my arms so it takes a few more minutes than usual. Fitbit says I did about 14,700 steps.

Needless to say I was pretty darn glad to be "done" tonight ! It was cooler and a bit cloudy this morning so it was nice to sit out on the front porch and work. The sun eventually came out and then it got really hot. With the fan I was able to work out there all day anyways. A cold front has arrived with some rain and we're back to 70's and low 80's for the rest of the week. I love the heat but I don't mind a break from it now and then ! One nice thing about satellite tv is I know when a storm is coming. The picture started to break up around 8:30 pm and I had just enough time to close the windows before it started to pour ! It was a little bit of a "Twister" moment ! Remember the tv's going snowy at the motel and drive-in ? I love that movie !

I managed to get through three 90 degree days without missing a workout and I'm pretty happy about that. I let the heat keep me from exercising on more than one occasion over the past 537 days but I'm working on eliminating all of the excuses I use ! I didn't have any trouble getting motivated this morning or at lunchtime but when it came time for my evening workout it was hot and I was overheated and not looking forward to 28 minutes on the treadmill (plus the 6 minutes for warm up and cool down) ... but I did it anyways and I survived. I drank a lot more water today and that helped. I am pretty tired so I'm heading upstairs for a long cool shower and my bed. I have a 39 minute workout on my schedule tomorrow and if I want to do it in the morning I need to boot myself out of bed at 6:30 sharp !
