Day 483: Try Again
"Don't be afraid to try something. If it
fails, you can always try again and
again until you succeed."
~Sonya Parker~
It's Day 483 of Nutrisystem and Day 46 of quarantine. I am no stranger to failure. In fact, for many years I was afraid to try anything new or unfamiliar because I was afraid of failing ! I don't think anybody likes failure and it's not easy to admit when you've failed. Something as simple as going someplace I've never been before can trigger fear (or maybe anxiety?) because I might get lost .. even though I always check the route in advance and use the GPS on my phone to navigate ! Once I've gone and "know my way" the fear of getting lost dissipates and I'm fine the next time I go. So new experiences are always a challenge for me. Trying to get 3 workouts a day in is a challenge. Trying more advanced workouts is another challenge. Today I rose to meet both of these challenges but not with the level of success I wanted ! The goal is to get up at 6 am and get a workout in before work. That happened unintentionally on Tuesday. Yesterday I struggled mightily but was up before 7:30 and squeezed the workout in. Today I was up before 7 and easily got the workout in. Although I'm going in the right direction I will only give myself a C for today's effort. My point is I'm going to keep trying until I succeed. Consistency doesn't happen overnight so bouncing out of bed at 6 am is going to take some hard work to make it happen on a daily basis. Same goes for more advanced workouts. The workout I did after work today nearly killed me. I had to stop for a break but I went back and finished it and plan to do it again and again until I can do it without that break. I will keep trying until I succeed ! Changing my eating habits has turned out to be the easiest part of this whole new way of life !
Breakfast was a 2.1 ounce 160 calorie cherry cheese roll. Power fuel was a 5.3 ounce 80 calorie Light & Fit strawberry cheesecake yogurt. Morning snack was a 155 calorie vanilla shake with peanut butter powder. Lunch was a 4 ounce 230 calorie four cheese melt with a chef salad. Dressing added 30 calories. Afternoon snack was a 1.3 ounce 200 calorie Nature Valley peanut almond & dark chocolate protein bar. Dinner was a 4 ounce 180 calorie artichoke & spinach stuffed chicken breast with roasted veggies. Evening snack was a 2.1 ounce 130 calorie strawberry shortcake cupcake. Total calories for the day are 1165 and I got 64 ounces of water in.
Today I succeeded in getting out of bed before 7 am and got a workout in before work. It was #13 in the Grand Canyon series with iFit trainer John Peel. It was 21 minutes of max incline but the speed never exceeded 2.6 mph. My lunchtime workout was 22 minutes in Oregon with iFit trainer Zac Marion. The speed was 3 mph and half of this one was at max incline. Speed dropped slightly to 2.6 or 2.7 mph and that was just enough to keep me going. After work I took on 31 minutes of pyramid inclines in Hawaii with iFit trainer Kirsty Godso. This one about killed me. I knew it was going to test me and it certainly delivered ! It was basically 3 minute "intervals" of increasing speed but there were no recoveries. The first 3 minutes at 3 mph was fine. Three minutes at 3.3 mph was ok too. Three minutes at 3.5 was hard. Three minutes at 3.7 was really hard. Three minutes at 3.9 nearly killed me but I did it. From here the speed decreased back down the pyramid. I made it through the 3 minutes at 3.7 but at that point I had to pause and step off the treadmill to sit in front of the fan and catch my breath. This was at the 21 minute mark. After 2 minutes I got back on the treadmill and finished the workout strong. I hated the fact that I had to stop but I felt like my heart was going to explode and I could not catch my breath, so I had no choice. What is encouraging is the fact that I was able to recover relatively quickly. I'm told the less time you need to recover, the more fit you are ! I will repeat this workout until I can get through it without stopping. It might take 2 tries or 100, but I will do it. It will be a mini challenge for myself. I logged 74 minutes, 3.5 miles and 559 calories. Needless to say I scarfed down my dinner and then contemplated the Total Gym. I won't lie - I was tired and didn't want to exercise anymore, but I did it anyway. I repeated the same exercises I did last night because I woke up with some sore arms and shoulders today and that tells me I'm working some new muscles ! I didn't check the time but I was probably on it for a half hour or so.
After work I threw veggies in the oven to roast while I exercised. I prepped them on Sunday so all I had to do was drizzle on some olive oil and seasonings. Weather was nothing to write home about today. It rained on and off all day and the heavy rain moved in around 6 pm. No satellite signal meant a quiet atmosphere while I was using the Total Gym. The signal returned as I was finishing so the timing was perfect ! Tomorrow is Friday and like most of us I'm not really excited about the weekend, since all I have to look forward to is a trip to Walmart. It the weather cooperates I may get outside and start thinking about what landscaping I want to do.
There is nothing on tv so I'm going to call it a day early and go take my shower. I have plenty of movies on the DVR so I'll unwind with a movie and some games on my tablet.
