Day 411: Propel Yourself
"By understanding what drives you
emotionally, you can discover creative
ways to get inspired and propel yourself
towards success."
I never thought of myself as an emotional eater, which is laughable since I was totally an emotional eater ! I guess that over time my eating habits just became my "normal" and I got really good at putting my head in the sand, instead of facing life head on. I also buried my emotions for so long that I didn't really have a recognizable emotional response when I was eating, so it took a while for me to make the connection. Or maybe it just took me a long time to admit it to myself. My idea of emotional eating was people who "binge" when faced with trauma or an obstacle. Turns out there is a whole lot more to that and binge eating is just one facet of it. When I look back now I can see the pattern that developed in my life over many years. What's ironic is that a healthy meal can be just as fulfilling as that bag of candy or that pint of ice cream. A couple weeks ago I had an amazing "veggie burger" at Point Place casino. I enjoyed it so much that it still makes me smile when I think about it. Same goes for the veggies I roasted on Sunday. They are so delicious ! For me, the beauty of Nutrisystem is I don't feel deprived. I have a sweet pastry for breakfast almost every day and I have dessert almost every night. I don't think I could have been this successful without those sweet things. Some people don't like a lot of sweets but Nutrisystem has enough choices to accommodate every taste. I am thankful every day that I made the decision to give it a try. Feeling better about the way I looked went a long way towards motivating me to work harder at exercise. The first few months were a struggle and I really, really hated exercise. When I really started to "see" myself in the mirror it gave me the spark needed to work harder at it. Some days I stand in front of the mirror and ask myself why it took so long to address my weight. I don't dwell on the past quite so much now but I do use those memories to keep me moving in the right direction. People ask me what my "secret" is when it comes to weight loss. I really don't have one and I can't take all the credit. I'm following Nutrisystem's plan pretty closely and exercising as much as possible. I also changed my relationship with food. I'm learning not to use it as a reward and I don't turn to food when life throws me a curve ball. It really is that simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy.
Breakfast was a 2.1 ounce 180 calorie cinnamon roll with hazelnut coffee. Power fuel was a 5.3 ounce 80 calorie Light & Fit caramel apple pie yogurt. Morning snack was a 155 calorie chocolate shake with peanut butter powder. Lunch was a 4 ounce 220 calorie spinach & cheese pretzel melt with roasted veggies. Afternoon snack was a 1.58 ounce 180 calorie almond, cranberry & oat bar. Only one more of these to go ! This left 385 calories for dinner and an evening snack. Dinner was a 9.5 ounce 260 calorie roasted turkey medallions with mashed potatoes and gravy. I had a big bowl of roasted veggies with it. Evening snack was a 1.9 ounce 120 calorie tiramisu. Total calories for the day are 1195 and I got 64 ounces of water in.
Today was a work at home day so I was able to complete #9 of 13 in the Easter Island series with Dr Dale Simpson. This walk was close to 22 minutes and the speed was 2.5 or 2.6 mph the entire time. There was some brief incline in the beginning. These walks are considered a level 1 workout while the Mount Kilimanjaro series is level 3, so they're a good blend for me. After work I completed #18 of 23 in the Mount Kilimanjaro series with Jake Norton. This 51 minute workout just about killed me. It was at max incline (10%) until about the 43 minute mark and the speed ranged from 1.2 to 2.5 mph, so a little faster than yesterday. I don't think I've ever sweated so much on the treadmill. I did not think I would be able to finish this one. At several points I thought about pausing to take a break but then I remembered something Jake said during yesterday's workout. He talked about pushing through the pain by telling yourself 10 more steps or setting your sites on a nearby object and then you keep going with these micro-goals. So that's pretty much what I did. At times I had to look away from the video too, because I was watching the clock and that is never motivating. In the end I made it to the end and I was pretty darn proud of myself ! Today I logged 2.6 miles, 73 minutes and 472 calories. Once I had dinner I was done for the day so I did not use the Total Gym today. I'm feeling a good kind of tired !
I was awake before 6 am today and it was snowing pretty good when I got up. I was very glad I didn't have to drive to the office ! Since it was so early I took a quick shower and then changed the sheets on my bed before heading downstairs to feed 2 hungry cats and myself. I finally took the time to download the app and charge the battery for the Ring Doorbell I got for Christmas too. Now I just have to get it installed outside ! It was snowy all morning but warmed up into the 40's this afternoon and tomorrow is supposed to be a quiet weather day. There is a winter storm watch for my area starting tomorrow night so I may be home on Thursday again ! Only 30 days until Spring !
It's only 9 pm but I'm heading for a shower and bed now, since I do have to be up early tomorrow and I'm tired.
