Day 360: A Year
"A year ago, everything was different. And now that I look back, I realize that a year can do a lot to a person."
One year ago today I was at one of the lowest points in my life. Photos taken on Christmas finally opened my eyes to the reality of my weight and it was not pretty. I was stunned at how heavy I was. I knew I needed to lose weight but until I saw those photos I honestly didn't realize how bad it was. When you always look in the mirror while standing it is very easy to fool yourself when it comes to your weight. When you see all 304 pounds of you sitting down ... it's a whole different picture. I was devastated and pretty depressed by those photos. I knew I had to do something. I can't really pinpoint what led me to Nutrisystem other than the fact that they send the food right to your door and the program sounded easy: eat the food, lose the weight. It was a big financial commitment but on that dark day I decided I was worth the investment. While I waited for my shipment to arrive I focused on cleaning out my fridge, freezer and pantry. I threw away hundreds of dollars worth of food .. all junk. At first I was going to try and eat everything .. then I stopped myself and said "what are you thinking?!?!?" For one thing, I couldn't possibly eat all the food I had in the house before my Nutrisystem shipment arrived. For another, I had just had a meltdown over my weight and even thinking about eating ten's of thousands of calories was just insane. So it all went in the trash. What was eye opening was the food items I had bought, had for months and never opened. It was like I just needed to have it there even though I didn't consume a lot of it. As much as I hated to waste all that food it had to be done. I guess having all that uneaten food on hand was a component of emotional eating and perhaps a reminder of the hard times I'd been through. Even today I always have an excess of Nutrisystem food and I sometimes worry about having "enough". I also tend to have multiples of non-food items on hand. I suppose that's not a bad thing since I rarely run out of anything, but I recognize that it's because of the times in my life that I was living paycheck to paycheck and barely surviving.
Breakfast was a 2.1 ounce 160 calorie cherry cheese roll with peppermint bark coffee. Second cup was brown sugar crumble and my power fuel was a 5.3 ounce 80 calorie Light & Fit toasted coconut vanilla yogurt. I did not have a morning snack. Lunch was a 3.8 ounce 220 calorie pepperoni pizza melt with a chef salad. Dressing added 30 calories. I also didn't have an afternoon snack. Dinner was a 7.5 ounce 220 calorie chicken fettuccine alfredo served over riced cauliflower. I was starving so I also had a big bowl of the veggies I roasted yesterday. Evening snack was a 2.1 ounce 130 calorie cream filled chocolate cupcake. Since I had a lot of calories left I also had a 1.1 ounce 130 calorie package of chocolate covered pretzels. Total calories for the day are 970 and I got 64 ounces of water in.
Although I could easily have sat on the couch all day today I pushed myself off it to work out. I put on some awesome new leggings I got for Christmas and did another of the Hannah Eden workouts. This 30 minute workout started with three 90 second pushes at 3 mph followed by 45 second recoveries at 2.7 mph. It progressed to six 2 minute pushes at 3.1 mph with 30 second recoveries at 2.7 mph. After a 2 minute recovery there were two final 2 minute pushes at 3.2 mph, separated by a 30 second recovery at 2.7 mph. She's an engaging trainer but the workout didn't match the terrain or her pace, so it didn't make a lot of sense to me. During most of the workouts I've done the trainer is pretty much doing exactly what you're doing but that was not the case today. Regardless, I enjoyed the workout and I love Hannah's enthusiasm and energy. I had lunch after my workout and then relaxed on the couch to watch a few episodes of Dr Pol. I got a second workout in before dinner. It was another interval workout, this time with Jonnie Gale in India. This one had five 2 minute pushes at 3.2 mph with 1 minute recoveries at 2.7 mph followed by six 1 minute pushes and 1 minute recoveries at the same speeds. Today I logged 2.9 miles, 62 minutes and 319 calories.
I wholeheartedly agree that a year can do a lot to a person. Life is not perfect but it is so much better than it has ever been. I'm still adjusting to feeling good about the way I look and I'm committed to continuing to work just as hard to get to my goal weight. So that is my main goal for 2020. My fitness and financial goals will continue to evolve in 2020 as well. For now I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing.
Vacation is over so tomorrow is a work day. The good news is I'm working from home tomorrow and Tuesday and then I'm off Wednesday and Thursday, then working from home on Friday too. So I'll be easing back into work mode !
Time for a shower and then bed !
