Day 30: Live Your Life
“Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s okay. You’re here to live your life, not to make everyone understand.”
I don’t know who wrote this but it spoke to me. I feel like I’m finally living my life and I don’t need anyone’s approval.
It’s Groundhog Day and according to Punxsutawney Phil we’re going to have an early Spring ! I sure hope that little rodent was right ! It was 6 degrees when I got up but a few hours of blue skies and sunshine made up for the chill ! The tv was on The Weather Channel when I got up so I actually watched the live coverage of Groundhog Day in Pennsylvania. They had a fireworks display shortly before 7 am (yes, I was up early) and then they dragged the poor guy out of his warm bed of straw. They weren’t looking for a shadow .. they put 2 scrolls in front of him and the one he sniffed first was the one that held the prediction, early spring in this case ! They claim he’s never been wrong so we’ll see ! There were thousands of people there for the big event and many stayed long after to take pictures with good old Phil ! One couple came from Texas and got engaged (she was surprised and the ring was gorgeous!) while they were there. Lots of people said they were there fulfilling a bucket list item.
Breakfast today was a 1 ounce 90 calorie bowl of nutriflakes cereal with skim milk. I didn’t need the entire 1/2 cup of milk for the cereal so I added some to a cup of triple chocolate coffee. It did nothing for the coffee so I’m still ok with plain black coffee. Breakfast also calls for a PowerFuel which is supposed to be 80-120 calories so I had 2 string cheese, which is 100 calories. After I did that I remembered the milk was the PowerFuel .. oh well ! I went out for the day so I packed my vanilla shake and had that basically for lunch. Went to Costco to pick up a few things and had dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse with my mom, my brother and his girlfriend. I had a couple (literally 2) of food samples at Costco because I was starving but I don’t feel like that was the end of the world. If you’ve been to Costco you know all about the sampling ! I picked up a jar of peanut butter powder to add to my shakes occasionally. You can also make your own low cal peanut butter by mixing some with water. It has much fewer calories. I also found fresh brussel sprouts and organic baby carrots so I’m going to roast a bunch in the oven tomorrow. At dinner I had an 8 ounce sirloin with onions and mushrooms and a side of broccoli. I ate all of the broccoli but I brought half of the rest home, so I stayed within the 4 ounce guideline for meat. The veggies have no limits so I feel like I did pretty good with this meal. I did have a small piece of bread with it but again, all within what is allowed. I did treat myself to a cocktail - a Moscow Mule, which was incredibly delicious ! It was made with Deep Eddy Vodka, ginger puree and fresh squeezed lime juice. I can’t really give a calorie count for this meal. Longhorn’s menu put the 6 ounce steak at 320 calories, so I’m estimating half of the 8 ounce would be about 215, which isn’t bad. There was likely some fat involved in cooking the onions and mushrooms so I’m sure there are added calories there. Even if I put the meal at a high estimate of 700 calories I am still well within my calories for the day. I had a free $50 casino credit so I took mom to the casino to round out the day. My niece came with us so once I used my credit I hung out with her by the fire and drank hot tea. Mom had a very profitable night and I enjoyed just spending some time with my niece. I stuck to my commitment to spend no money in casino’s in 2019 and even brought home $10. My last indulgence of the day was a toasted slice of homemade bread. My niece learned how to make bread today and shared some with mom and I. It was made with honey instead of sugar and it was incredibly delicious !
I consider today to be a success when it comes to my food choices, even though it felt like a day of indulgence. Nutrisystem does encourage a flex day where you craft your own meals and although I’m not planning on doing that on a regular basis it comes in handy when you do have the opportunity to eat out. I have no regrets .. I had a great day after a less than stellar week.
Driving home tonight I was surprised to pass a plow spraying brine on the highway when I got to Central Square. The roads were bone dry when I went out this morning and we didn’t have any snow or rain today. THEN I noticed the road was shiny ! Needless to say my foot came off the gas in a hurry. The temp had dropped below freezing and a fine mist was falling. I was very glad the plows were out and I was glad to make it home safely !
I think the food I ate today had a lot more salt than I’m used to ... as I’ve had 32 ounces of water since I got home less than 2 hours ago ! Something tells me it’s going to be a restless night.
