Day 693: Being Thankful

Today is day 693 of Nutrisystem. For me, it's a day to be thankful for all of the blessings in my life. Despite the state of the world my personal blessings outweigh my hardships and for that I am grateful. I've had many wonderful Thanksgiving's and today will be no different. I'll be with my family and we're all healthy. What more can you ask for right now ? I spent a few Thanksgivings without my family and despite the hardships in my life I rolled up my sleeves and always cooked a full turkey dinner. I was not going to let anything keep me from enjoying that one day of the year. We had dogs so they each got a plate as well, since they were family ! It was a lot of work and a lot of mess but it was always worth the effort. My only regret today is that my dad is no longer with us. Thanksgiving 2011 was our last with him, as he passed in January 2012. He loved the dark meat so he always looked forward to a giant crispy leg ! When life gets me down I think about all the hardships I've already been through. No matter how hard my life got I knew there was always, always, always someone that was worse off than me. That realization helped me get through a lot of dark days and it makes me more grateful for where I am today.

Today's update on Tommy Rivs was heartbreaking. It merely stated he spent the day alone. He's in isolation because of the chemo and his fragile immune system. I will hope and pray he is here next year to enjoy the day with his loved ones. Rage on Tommy !

Breakfast was a 2 ounce 180 calorie cinnamon roll and a 5.3 ounce 80 calorie Light & Fit key lime yogurt. After that it was a full on turkey feast. I had mashed potatoes, gravy, turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, corn bread and salad. Dessert was apple crisp and my mom's chocolate pie. I will admit to 2 servings of stuffing and a 2nd helping of green bean casserole. I had one glass of wine as well. Calories are unknown and unimportant this one day. I won't say I "messed up" my diet. I won't say I "cheated". I won't attach negative emotion to eating. Today I opted to enjoy the day, within reason. I will do the same on Christmas. I will also spend the 28 days in between these 2 events abiding by the Nutrisystem plan and continuing to work on my fitness.

Time was tight this morning and my ankle is still painful so there was no treadmill time today. I did order a good pair of running shoes this evening and they should arrive late next week. Hoka Clifton 7's come highly recommended and have a 30 day guarantee so I'm giving them a try. It was not easy to commit $130 to sneakers but quality footwear with a higher level of support is clearly necessary. I've been walking in the same shoes for well over a year and it was fine until I started working on endurance. For endurance you need better footwear and right now I'm paying the price for not having appropriate footwear. I do plan to try the treadmill again Sunday with zero incline and slower speeds and I'll nurse the ankle along until I get my new shoes and am pain free. I've also been cautioned to go slow with the new shoes to give my feet and legs time to acclimate to the different level of support. So I expect to be able to put in the time on the treadmill but my distance and calorie burn will be lower since my speed and incline will be lower. So the next couple of weeks are going to be a period of transition. I can flex the ankle without pain right now so I should be able to get back to the Total Gym starting Sunday too.

As soon as I got up today I warmed up the sausage, onion & celery mixture and got my stuffing ready for the oven. Since I only make it once a year I made a lot so that I'd have a small extra pan to package up for the freezer. What I did last year was take out a portion each time I had a Nutrisystem turkey dinner ! It was a little extra that I truly enjoyed. Dinner was wonderful and it was so nice to be able to just sit and visit with my family. Crazy as it sounds I'm going shopping tomorrow with my older sister. I haven't been shopping on Black Friday in quite a few years and I expect this year it will be a lot different ! On that note it's time for a shower and bed !
