Day 234: Do Better

"Sometimes we miss a workout or eat something that isn't ideal, but if you had a flat tire on your car, would you get out and puncture the other three ? Of course not ! If you slip, shake it off and do better the next day."  ~Jillian Michaels~

I might have used this quote before, but today was that next day for me .. again ! So today my mission was to shake it off and do better. Well, waking up at 10 am didn't really say "motivation" to me ! I went to bed after midnight so when I woke up the first time at 7 am I wasn't really ready to give up the warmth of my bed. For one thing, it was cold this morning ! 65 degrees in my bedroom when I finally got up at 10 ! It's only August 25th and I'm already thinking about turning the heat on ! Instead of continuing to wring my hands over missing my workout 2 days in a row and pretty much just sitting on the couch all day yesterday, I was looking ahead and I was confident I would be back on track today. It's not like I sat on the couch eating all day yesterday - I followed the Nutrisystem guidelines so there is really nothing to be ashamed of. I'm not quite so young anymore and unfortunately a long day of walking Friday took a lot out of me. I could absolutely have pushed myself to the max and got 1 or 2 workouts in yesterday - but I'm reminding myself that this journey towards fitness and a healthy weight is a marathon, not a sprint. I'm not going to change 40 years of bad habits in 234 days. So I still have some things to learn. I'm not perfect. In addition to being tired yesterday I really wanted to give my heel some time to start the healing process. The fitness pros would call all of this "excuses" and maybe they are, but I feel like I know my capabilities better than anyone and forcing it yesterday would not have been a wise decision. So again, today my mission was to shake it off and do better !

Breakfast was a 2.1 ounce 160 calorie cherry cheese roll with french vanilla coffee. After that I was out for the day and all I ate was the turkey dinner at Point Place casino. I can only guess the calories. An ice cream scoop size portion of mashed potatoes with gravy, a few thin slices of turkey and about 1/2 cup of sweet corn. I did a little Google research - 1/2 cup of mashed pototoes is 107 calories. 1/2 cup of sweet corn is 66 calories. 6 ounces of turkey is 177. 1/2 cup of gravy is about 60 calories. That's only 410. If I round up to 500 my calories for the day would only be 790, so I've got quite a deficit today. I did get about 64 ounces of water in. One thing I did not get was my 4 servings of veggies.

After breakfast I was off to grocery shop with mom so that's why I never ate anything. After a trip to Wegman's we got to Point Place about 2:30. I'm happy to say I left there at 6 with the same amount of money I arrived with and dinner was free with my casino points ! Although I was worried about my heel, after I got home and put my groceries away I got on the treadmill. About 7 or 8 minutes in I could tell there was a lot of friction on my heel but giving up wasn't an option. I paused the treadmill, grabbed a knife and cut the back off my right sneaker. Put the shoe back on and finished my workout ! I've been saying I need to start wearing my new sneakers and as soon as my heel is better I'll be switching over to them. After my workout I made a big pan of roasted veggies, packed up some carrots for the weeks lunches and and got everything ready for morning. I also threw a non-frozen dinner entree in my purse because I don't know what I'll be walking in to tomorrow. Our union employees are on strike in Florida so I may be working 12 hour days. I feel bad for our Syracuse transplants, they've been through so much already this year. Hopefully the company and the union can reach a fair settlement quickly. I walked a picket line for 30 days in 1986 so I know what it's like.

My whole house smells delicious right now because of the veggies I roasted. I'm looking forward to having a big bowl of them with my dinner tomorrow night. I roasted green beans, broccoli, carrots, red, yellow and orange bell peppers, mushrooms and red onion. I topped them with olive oil, hot garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Next up is a warm shower and my comfy bed. I slept late this morning but I was busy most of the day, so I hope I don't have trouble getting to sleep. I may have to work 12 hours tomorrow so I really need a good nights sleep.
